The Bay Area Studio Artists (BASA) are showing “Light/Dark,” a collection of paintings that illustrate the myriad ways the play of light and dark contribute to the success of an artwork, at the Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Art Gallery at the Benicia Public Library, Oct. 10 to Nov. 19.
Among the works on display is Robin: A Spark in the Dark, a large-scale portrait of Robin Williams, made up of 24-10 x 10 inch canvases, painted by the seven BASA artists. This signature piece is designed as a meditation on two ideas of light and dark: the light and dark patterns and balances that make a painting visually compelling and the lights and darks that represent the emotional highs and lows in our lives, epitomized by the well-loved comedian, who embodied the brightest of light as well as the darker side of reality.
The exhibit is open during regular library hours (M-Th 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and F-Sun noon- 6 p.m.) at 150 East L St, Benicia.
